Middle-Spotted Woodpecker. Puszcza Bialowieska 2004.
A very warm welcome to my site. I hope you enjoy what you see here.
Been watching birds and other wildlife since an early age. My experiences diluted to essence through the medium of Art. Most of my artwork is based on UK birds and wildlife. Though I have spent much time in Poland, and the Balearics, and am familiar with their wildlife. I now live in Pembrokeshire, Wales, but was born in South Gloucestershire.
I enjoy sketching in the field. And like to embellish this with photography to capture the habitat in which I sketched my subject. For me, an authentic portrayal of the subject within its environment has become a very important issue in its reproduction. Currently I'm finding the value of video-grabs from film I've made of bird & wildlife subjects. Breaking down a film by frames really does help an artist understand how a subject moves and behaves!
I work mainly in gouache, water-colour, and acrylic paint. But will apply any mixed media to a piece if I think I can improve it. Water-colour pencil is often used to add the finishing touches. Bristol Board, found cardboard, and canvas are favourite final resting places for my paintings. I like to sketch within the small pages of my Black ‘n’ Red notebooks. Anything larger for me makes me think I’m trying to do a piece in the field, and detracts from the “record taking” I’m trying to recount.
Here you will find examples of my ink and line-work also.
Have worked for BBC Wildlife Magazine, The Worldwide Fund for Nature, Birdwatch Magazine, The Wildlife Trusts, Bristol Zoo, The Independent Zoo Review, Nature Nurture, and have illustrated many local bird reports. Among private commissions.
Runner-Up in The BBC Wildlife Cartoonist of the Year 1993.
I hope you enjoy what you find here, and garner some joy from the reproductions of the living wonders I’ve been lucky enough to encounter…
This site is still being built. It is a work in progress.
Most of my life I have been a cartoonist and illustrator. Click here to see the other side of my work.
